Poured concrete vs. composite pads
Poured concrete is the most common option: a slab typically 4 inches thick, sized to the generator's footprint with a few inches of clearance on each side. This is what most installers default to, and it's the option local code most reliably accepts without question.
Composite equipment pads — pre-formed high-density polyethylene or similar materials — are a faster alternative that can be placed the day of installation rather than waiting for concrete to cure. Many manufacturers list composite pads as acceptable, but confirm the specific model is rated for your generator's weight before the installer orders one.
Minimum dimensions and typical specs
A common residential standby generator (14–22 kW) typically has a footprint around 48 inches long by 28–32 inches wide. The pad should extend 3–6 inches beyond the mounting points on each side. Four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete is a typical minimum spec, though local code and manufacturer requirements govern the final number.
The pad also needs to be level — a slope of more than a few degrees causes oil to pool away from the oil pan pickup, which eventually affects engine lubrication. Proper grading around the pad prevents water from accumulating underneath.
How the pad fits into installation timing
If a poured concrete pad is being used, it's typically poured before the generator arrives — concrete needs 24–48 hours before weight is placed on it, and a week or more for full strength. This is one reason installation timelines span weeks rather than days.
Composite pads eliminate this curing delay and can compress the timeline somewhat, though they're not universally accepted in all jurisdictions. Confirm with your installer and permitting office if timing is a primary concern.
