Generator noise is measured in decibels (dB) at a specific distance — most manufacturers test at 23 feet (7 meters). A 65 dB rating at that distance is roughly equivalent to a normal conversation or office background noise. For reference, 70 dB is closer to a vacuum cleaner; 55 dB is near a quiet suburban street.
Because the decibel scale is logarithmic, a unit rated 70 dB isn't just slightly louder than one rated 60 dB — it's roughly twice as loud to the human ear. The difference between a 62 dB and a 72 dB generator is meaningful, not cosmetic.
