A manual transfer switch requires a person to physically flip it from utility power to generator power — and back again when utility power returns. An automatic transfer switch (ATS) monitors the utility supply and switches over automatically, with no manual intervention.
This distinction maps directly to how each generator type works: portable generators pair with manual transfer switches because you're already outside starting the generator by hand. Standby generators require automatic transfer switches because the entire value of a standby unit is that it works without you being present.
Manual transfer switches: what they're for
A manual transfer switch — or a simpler interlock kit — is the code-safe way to connect a portable generator to your home's wiring. It prevents backfeeding power onto utility lines, which is the primary safety requirement for any generator connection.
Manual switches are less expensive than ATS units and are appropriate for portable generator setups where manual operation is acceptable. They're not a practical option for standby generators.
Automatic transfer switches: the standby generator requirement
An ATS is a code requirement for any permanently installed standby generator — it's not an optional upgrade. The NEC and most local codes require that power transfer between utility and generator be handled by a listed transfer device that prevents backfeeding. An ATS meets this requirement with the added benefit of automatic operation.
ATS units range from smaller critical-circuit models (covering a select subset of breakers) to whole-house models (covering the full electrical panel). The choice between these is about generator sizing and which circuits you want backed up — both types are code-compliant.
Interlock kits: a third option for portable generator hookups
An interlock kit is a mechanical device added to an existing panel that physically prevents both the main breaker and a generator breaker from being engaged simultaneously. This provides the critical backfeed-prevention safety function at lower cost than a dedicated transfer panel, and is accepted by many local codes for portable generator hookups.
Interlock kits are not used with standby generators, which require the automatic switching functionality of a full ATS.
